Castleton, IN Area Guide

Castleton was founded as a small village in Marion County, originally a railroad stop. Rev. James T. Wright bought the land that Castleton stands on in 1843, and organized what is now the Castleton United Methodist Church. Last to be plotted in Lawrence township in 1852 because of the Nickel Plate railroad, Castleton continued to grow in population through the turn of the century. Continuing to grow during the 1970’s and 80’s, Castleton is notable for being primarily suburban and for its commercial developments.

The largest mall in Indiana is located in Castleton, as well as fine dining, four star hotels and great shopping. Adjacent to the Geist and Clearwater areas, Castleton was once formally included under the consolidated city-county government called Unigov. But since the meaning of the town status was uncertain, Castleton officially dissolved and reverted to the City of Indianapolis.
